Mexico, Guatemala Launch Joint Border Security Efforts
Mexico’s Secretary of National Defense, Ricardo Trevilla Trejo, revealed the initiative during a press briefing in Mexico City, following a recent clash between Guatemala’s Armed Forces and armed individuals suspected of belonging to a Mexican cartel on Guatemalan soil.
“A plan will be implemented to carry out coordinated operations along the border with Mexican Army forces on our territory, and similar operations will also be conducted with personnel from Guatemala. These operations begin today and are tentatively scheduled to end on the 11th. However, if necessary, they will be extended for as long as required,” Trejo explained during the conference.
He added that authorities have instructed the Southeast Military Air Region, based in Tuxtla Gutierrez, the capital of Chiapas state, to perform surveillance flights along the Mexican side of the border.
The announcement comes after an incident on Monday night, when Guatemala’s Ministry of Defense reported a shooting in a small Huehuetenango community near the Mexican frontier.
The ministry stated that “unidentified illegal armed groups” entered Guatemala and engaged with a routine army patrol, leading to the attack on soldiers.
The clash resulted in one Guatemalan soldier sustaining minor injuries.
Following the confrontation, military forces secured the area, arresting one suspect and confiscating heavy weapons, explosives, other equipment, and drones.
